My friend begins each day by spending quiet time in her closet. It is also her dressing room every morning. Unfortunately, her walk in closet was more of a barely-gets-her-toes-in-the-door closet. The door would not fully shut due to the amount of shoes, clothes, and bags weighing down the over the door shoe rack. She was unable to easily see or find clothes in which to get dressed because the hangers were so tightly packed on the rods she could neither hang anything up or pull anything out and because of that, the floor was covered in piles of clean and dirty clothes, shoes, and sundries.

Her house is beautifully decorated and always clean. She works a calendar with military precision and her menus are always on point. If you need someone to make a schedule for anything at all, she is your gal. She never looks anything but beautifully coordinated when she leaves the house.  I say all of that to qualify that ANYONE, even the person who seems the most put together, needs a little help sometimes.

My friend knows that I actually enjoy cleaning out spaces and asked me to come and help her edit and organize. She wanted her closet to have a clear floor space, for her clothes to be color coded, for there to be a place for a valet tray, and to have easy access to her work clothes. But ultimately, she desired to have a peaceful place to pray and enjoy getting dressed. When she said, “I start every day in chaos” it broke my heart. Turmoil and unrest were setting the tone for her day.

I didn’t want that for my friend.

I don’t want that for ANYONE.

Before: Dark, chaotic, and overwhelming, the closet was spilling out into the bathroom.

It was while we were wading through the piles of clothes that I decided I would like to help other people have the kind of catharsis that she had. At the end of the process, her floor was clear, the door could shut, she had designated spaces for a valet tray, her clothes were pared down and color coded, her work clothes were close at hand, she said she felt lighter, and even continued on decluttering other spaces after I left.

That is the kind of experience I want to give my clients. I want to be a sounding board and give encouragement to get them toward their organizational goals and practical strategies so they can maintain the tidiness. Most of all, I want my clients to enjoy what they have, find peace in their space, and create a life they love.

Have a perfectly practical, practically perfect day!
